Yume Nikki is a game (free on Steam), that’s inspired me, alongside many others. Instead of a game with traditional gameplay mechanics, and without story, it’s more of an art piece. To me, it’s a meditative and even therapeutic experience to wander the dreams of Madotsuki, the main character. I often find ways to relate to the atmosphere, even without dialogue, which just shows the care that was put into the game, and even with it’s simplicity, it brings out emotions in myself and potentially millions of people online. This also begins to be apparent with how many fangames of Yume Nikki there are, leading me to bring up the website ynoproject.net, where you can play a lot of these fangames in one place. All of these games are free too, and now with yno, you can choose to either play them alone or with people. The amount of creativity shown in these fan games is what I find to be really inspiring. The fact that RPG Maker 2k3 is still being used, and can do cool things, is amazing to me.
